A Letter to my Friends
Dear friends,
I have not written much lately, because my mind is everywhere. I will readily admit it is normally everywhere, but this month it has taken a serious vacation and traveled to far distant lands. As you have already read, I am on sabbatical for the month of February and have used this time to rest, refresh and relax. I know the ramifications of a sabbatical and what is entails for a preacher, but I also know no one understands the need for one like a preacher. The constant toils of the ministry breeds more grey hair in the past year than I have ever had before, for some it has lead to ulcers, high blood pressure and changes to one’s body that need medical care. While this happens in every occupation, preachers feel a greater strain because this is an eternal occupation not a physical one.
For some, the phone rings for work and the problem is solved with a quick ride to work or details over the phone. For preachers, the phone rings and it usually leads to a long visit of a hurting family, a hospital visitation for a traumatic situation or a long phone conversation to assist someone in need. A preacher’s work engulfs their life. From the waking hours until the going down of the sun, a preacher’s thoughts are on the message and the life he lives. The power of God is truly seen in such a man because he is truly God’s. His public expression may hide the mask of a tearful morning spent in pray approaching the Almighty. Or the 20 minutes lesson may be the results of countless hours of research, prayer and discussion, but only seen in a short period of time which will never do it justice.
His life is a vapor before the One who created him, but the legacy of the work is everlasting. Seeds will be planted and souls will hear the message of a dying Savior and hearts will be changed. The hearts may not be changed in an instant, but they will be changed. God has a way of working on a person’s heart in which we never understand. I know He has worked on mine and I look forward to seeing what He can do.
This letter is not a gripe at the ministry of preachers, but a tribute to those who stand on the frontlines of the spiritual battle of this world. Their hearts need to be known and their lives need to be touched. I love being a preacher in the kingdom of God. There are a few things I would change, but I am going to let God handle that for now. I want to be His servant and I am going to leave it all into His hands.
I am trusting in His guiding word and His providence to light a path which cannot be mistaken. I trust in His infinite knowledge and His listening ear.
I will write more, but I needed a short break. I am sure that God has great things in store, I just need to let Him handle them.
Thanks for listening,
